Charcoal-based toothpaste may be one of the trendiest dental products around, but new research suggests they may increase the risk of abrasions, contribute to tooth decay and actually fail to whiten teeth.

According to a new review published in the British Dental Journal, charcoal can actually inactivate fluoride.
Also, it turned out that black toothpaste can be not only useless but also dangerous to health because of the possible content of carcinogenic polyaromatic hydrocarbons in charcoal – compounds that are found in coal, crude oil and gasoline.
