How to strengthen nails at home

If you notice that your nails have lost former beauty, strength and shine – it’s time to use the procedures to restore and strengthen them.


Most often this happens during off-season periods due to vitamin deficiency. There are also other reasons:

  • lack of nutrients (proteins and fats are very important for nails) in the diet;
  • lack of vitamins and minerals in the body;
  • environmental influences (sun or occasional mechanical damage);
  • exposure to chemicals.

Whatever the reasons lead to delamination, thinning and brittle nails, one should not forget that there are many remedies suitable for treatment at home.

Herb decoction bath

The most useful for the nail plates are calendula, chamomile, cornflowers, St. John’s wort, lemongrass, nettle and mint. You can make a decoction of one herb or make a composition. Dip your fingers in a warm, strong broth of herbs for 10-15 minutes, then apply cuticle oil and hand cream. Repeat the procedure every day to strengthen nails or restore.

Sea salt bath

Dissolve sea salt in water (approximately a teaspoon per 200 ml) and hold your hands in liquid for about 30 minutes. To enhance the recovery and strengthening the effect, add a couple of drops of iodine or tea tree oil. After the bath, apply oil (preferably jojoba or almond) to the cuticles and nail plates and use hand cream.

Paraffin hand mask

Paraffin is one of the best remedies to strengthen the nail plates and nail growth. In addition, it envelops the plate, making it smooth and moist.


Melt paraffin in a water bath, add a few drops of jojoba oil and apply this mixture on your fingers and nails. In the salon, cotton gloves would be worn on top of such a mask (sold at cosmetic stores). And you need to spend at least 2 hours with them. If you don’t have gloves, just spend 2-3 hours with a mask on your fingers. Then rinse off with warm water.
