The Power of Choice: Understanding Different Strengths of Hair Oxidizers

Hair oxidizers, or developers, come in different volumes or strengths. These range typically from 10 volume (3% hydrogen peroxide) to 40 volume (12% hydrogen peroxide). But what does this mean, and how do you choose the right developer for your hair?

The volume of the developer refers to its strength or how much it can open the cuticle of the hair shaft and lighten the hair's natural pigment. A lower-volume developer, like a 10 or 20 volume, is best for depositing color or toning the hair. It opens the cuticle enough to allow the color to enter but doesn't lift the natural hair color significantly.

On the other hand, a higher-volume developer, like a 30 or 40 volume, is used for lightening the hair or achieving a significant color change. These developers can lift the hair's natural color, allowing you to dye your hair a lighter shade than your natural color.

It's important to note that a stronger developer is not necessarily better. Using a developer that's too strong for your needs can cause unnecessary damage to your hair. It's all about choosing the right tool for the job.
