Everyone has heard about such a trend in yoga as fly yoga. It is also called hammock yoga and anti-gravity, but the main point is you soar through the air, relax and practice various asanas. How is fly yoga different from usual and what can be the results of the lessons? Read about it in our new article.

## What is it?

Fly yoga, or "anti-gravity yoga," is a type of yoga founded by Broadway dancer and gymnast Christopher Harrison in the 1990s. Anti-gravity yoga is aimed at physical and spiritual improvement. When practising asanas and gymnastic exercises in the suspended state, the human body is pulled from the heels to the top. In the upside-down position, the self-healing mechanism is automatically started in the person. Workouts improve overall health and increase fitness. Also, a good mood and a good figure in regular training are assured.

## What is the difference between ordinary and fly yoga?

The air and a special hammock, suspended by a meter above the floor level, allow the spine to stretch smoothly without tension, stretch the tendons and increase joint mobility.

The main forte of yoga in hammocks is the easy-to-perform inverted asanas that direct the blood to the brain and provide its cells with the necessary nutrition, thereby increasing concentration. Proponents of anti-gravity yoga claim that "suspended" people can perform those asanas, which in traditional classes is extremely difficult to do because of excessive stress in the body, especially in the back and neck.

In fly yoga, you can quickly see visible results. If you need more than one year of training in hatha yoga, then doing hammocks is much faster. A man adjusts his physical shape and outline of muscles, and the body becomes more flexible and plastic.

There is a myth that yoga does not help to lose weight, but it is not valid. If you exercise regularly, the effect of losing weight will not wait long for yourself. Moreover, it will not disappear in a short time as yoga normalizes metabolism.

## The benefits of fly yoga

Fly yoga helps in the functional improvement of the body in such areas as:

- strengthening of the muscular frame and plasticity of the whole body (since most of the postures are suspended, all groups of muscles and joints are included in the work);
- energy recharging (after classes, irrespective of the degree of difficulty, there is a feeling of lightness and expansion, as relaxing exercises alternate with force, which leads to the effect of energy accumulation);
- relaxation and stability of the nervous system during classes (particular relaxing asanas with the impact of swinging stabilize the psyche, develop stress resistance and lift the mood);
- stretching the major muscle groups (the hammock distributes the load evenly and is easy to relax, allowing stretch-oriented poses to be given very quickly and naturally).

## Contraindications

Like any other type of training, yoga has several contraindications:

- constant high pressure;
- chronic heart disease;
- eye diseases;
- disorders of the psyche;
- pathology of the spine;
- blood diseases;
- the presence of tumours;
- traumatic brain injury;
- recently underwent surgery;
- pregnancy.

Before training, trainers advise to have a little snack or not to eat at all. The main thing is not to overeat.

## Exercise with breathing

To accomplish it, switch your mind from any thoughts to your breath. Relax your facial muscles, stretch your shoulders, and take a deep breath at your normal pace. In this case, the air is collected not in the chest, but in the abdomen. Imagine that you have eaten up. Next, hold your breath for 3-5 seconds and exhale slowly.

Exhalation should be about one-third of the time longer than inhalation. We make short delays between each inhalation and exhalation (2-3 seconds). We repeat the breath – the delay – the exhalation – the delay, so 5-6 times. You can do this with both your nose and your mouth without straining too much. By inhaling, you mobilize your resources and fill your blood and organs with oxygen, and it is relaxing as if you exhale.

It is wonderful – until you realize that after it has fulfilled its function, it is almost impossible to get rid of it.

## The scale of the problem

The packaging often says that the plastic it is made of will be recycled. But this does not mean that a plastic bottle of milk can be turned into the same bottle. Often, it can only be converted into a plastic deck, which is not subject to further processing. Since the 1950s, when this group of materials began its victorious course on the planet, 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been produced. If this movement is not stopped, by 2050 this number will reach 34 billion tons. And all the plastic that does not burn (after all, it is made of oil!), all without exception, does not go anywhere, does not decompose. It often ends the earthly journey in the oceans. About 100,000 marine life and about a million seabirds die each year from the plastic they swallowed. Plymouth University published a study in 2016 that said a third of fish caught in the United Kingdom contains microparticles of plastic, and that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. That is, what we have thrown away in the trash goes back into our own food chain.

## How we can help the planet

### *Avoid packaged products*

Discard disposable tableware. After all, washing a few plates, glasses and appliances in our time is not such a difficult task, and they look much more beautiful than disposable ones that cannot be recycled.

### *Give a second life to a bottle*

Use the water bottle repeatedly, do not buy a new one each time. Just pour from a large bottle into a small one as much water as you need on the way. Better yet – give up bottled water at all, take filter water with you.

### *Instead of disposable cups, choose thermocup*

Count how many times a day you run to Starbucks for coffee and, accordingly, how many paper cups you use. Maybe it’s time to get a special reusable glass? Some cafes even give a small discount if you ask to pour coffee into your cup.

### *Refuse the straws*

Warn the waitress or the staff of the Drive-Thru cafes that you don’t need one. Talk to the barman at your local pub or bar, suggest not to put the straw in the drink by default, leaving it at the discretion of the customer. Tell about an alternative solution, such as bamboo straws, for example.

### *Choose the best for the baby*

When a baby born in the family, young parents want to give only the best. So why do they buy pieces of plastic with unknown composition? It is quite possible to replace these second-class toys with analogues made of natural materials: wood, wool, natural textiles.
