More colour: dermal tattoos that change colour depending on the health

Tattoos are no longer just an aesthetic addition to the body. Now they can help people with diabetes or kidney disease monitor their condition in real-time.

Scientists from the Technical University of Munich have developed new biosensory tattoos. The bottom line is that they can change their colour when changing a person’s indicators.

The liquid that is applied to the skin consists of various dyes. They react with elements of the human metabolic system and change colour depending on the concentration of pH, glucose and albumin.

For example, if the owner of the tattoo noticed that the pattern is turning yellow, it means that his blood acidity is too low, if it turns dark blue, then it is too high.

In the near future, scientists plan to test tattoos on volunteers.
