How to choose the right toothpaste

The health and beauty of our teeth depend on proper care. Toothpaste is an indispensable remedy of oral hygiene. In this article, GoBeauty Blog will teach you how to understand kinds of toothpaste and how to choose the one that satisfies you.

Classification

The entire range of pastes can be divided into two groups:

  • hygienic;
  • treatment and prevention.

The first group includes simpler toothpaste, created to maintain the cleanliness and freshness of the oral cavity in the absence of problems with teeth. Therapeutic and prophylactic remedies have more components, which include abrasive components and flavours, medicinal ingredients, herbal extracts.

Medicinal pastes, in addition to the basic hygienic properties, have anti-caries and anti-inflammatory effects. They not only help to clean the teeth from plaque, but also regulate the microflora of the oral cavity. Thereby preventing the development of inflammatory processes, reduce or prevent bleeding gums.

Such a narrow classification does not fully answer the question of how to choose toothpaste. Prefer whitening or healing? Or emphasize the anti-caries effect? To do this, pay attention to the ingredients.

More about the composition

Depending on the desired effect, you should distinguish between kinds of toothpaste:

  • with fluorides and calcium compounds – to restore and strengthen the structure of tooth enamel (Parodontax);
  • with essential oils, triclosan, medicinal extracts – to relieve inflammation and bleeding gums;
  • with the addition of salts of potassium, amine fluoride, strontium – reducing the sensitivity of teeth to various irritants;
  • containing vitamins of group B, A, E – to improve the metabolic processes of the mucous membrane (Lacalut);
  • with abrasives, hydrogen peroxide, urea, designed to whiten the tooth enamel.

Which toothpaste to choose

The dentist will help to find out which toothpaste is best for solving specific problems with the oral cavity. Be careful with pastes that contain triclosan or chlorhexidine. Cleaning with such products may be necessary for the treatment of inflammation in the gums or to eliminate bad breath. However, prolonged use (more than 3 weeks) of the paste with antibacterial substances can lead to disruption of the beneficial microflora of the oral cavity.
